Colour with purpose: choosing a bathroom feature tile

A feature surface can give a bathroom its identity. Choose its position, pattern and proportions together, then make the practical details part of the design.

A more personal bathroom

Colour and pattern are recurring themes in this week’s bathroom coverage. The Irish News, reporting on 15 October, discusses UK homeowners using accent walls within otherwise restrained rooms. Ideal Home’s 16 October feature explores a colourful bathroom built around an existing orange suite, while Homes & Gardens, on 18 October, considers the appeal of gingham tile layouts.

These are different expressions of a shared idea: giving a functional room a recognisable personality. They do not establish one winning trend, and editorial coverage is not search-volume evidence. For a renovation, the useful question is which surface deserves attention, and how that choice will work with the room you already have.

Choose the position before the pattern

Start with a simple plan showing the door, basin, bath and shower. Mark the surface you see first and the one you spend most time facing. They may be different. A wall behind the basin might provide a clear focal point; a shower wall may be partly hidden by an enclosure or reflected in a mirror.

Consider where the feature will end. A full wall, a recess and a carefully defined splashback each create a different proportion. Agree the edges, corners and junctions before ordering. This makes the feature feel connected to the architecture and gives your installer a clear design to follow.

Decide what will carry the character

Colour, pattern and surface variation need not all compete for attention. Choose the quality you most enjoy, then assemble the surrounding materials around it. Look at a group of tiles rather than judging a patterned design from one small sample, and include the vanity, paint and metal finishes in the comparison.

Maiolica offers botanical Garden and Forest designs alongside Plain, in glossy 14.8 × 14.8 cm porcelain wall tiles. It is a starting point for a decorative wall composition. For colour expressed through a simpler format, Traccia offers matt 6 × 30 cm porcelain in White, Sand, Clay, Taupe and Green.

Make the layout part of the decision

A small rectangular tile changes character when its direction changes. Sketch the intended arrangement and check how full tiles and cuts meet the basin, mirror and shower fittings. Positioning a pleasing pattern on the main wall is only part of the job; narrow cuts at a prominent edge can alter the result.

Riada provides glossy ceramic wall options in square and rectangular formats, with White, Sand, Sky and Green in the current catalogue. Compare the actual format you intend to order. Do not assume different collections share identical thickness, working dimensions or installation requirements simply because their photographs sit well together.

Resolve the details that photographs cannot show

Assess samples in the room during daylight and under the lighting you will use in the evening. Try the proposed grout colour beside them: a close tone can soften the grid, while contrast makes every joint more prominent. Ask your installer to confirm joint widths, edge treatment and the preparation needed for the chosen surface.

Keep application separate from appearance. A glossy wall tile is not automatically suitable for a bathroom or shower floor, and a matt finish alone does not establish slip performance. Confirm the exact product and installation specification for each area. Then order from the agreed layout, with cuts and wastage discussed in advance. A feature works best when its practical decisions are as considered as its colour.
